Sumerpur is located in the South western Part of Rajasthan. This town got its name from the Rajput rules of the area known as Shri Sumer Singh Maharaja of Marwar state. This town came into existencein the year 1912. This town is located on NH No.14 at a distance of 148 Kms from Jodhpur ,73 Kms from Pali & 37 Kms from Bali.Sumerpur town is one of the few inmportant newly developing towns in south western Rajasthan. it is located in the midst of fertile irrigation commend land of Jawai Dam Project. it is an important Mandi town and has vast potentiality for faster growth.in addition to the trade & commerce, other allied activities like establishment of agro based industries& power looms, cloth weaving & light engineering goods manufacturing unit have also developed. rajasthan investment and industrial Development Corporation is also developing an industrial estate in the town . This fast developing town is now facing lots of problem due to back of Intrastructure facilities such as Road. Sewerage, Drainage, Solid Waste disposal, Water supply & haphazard development & encrochments.Geographically this town is located at intersaction of western arid & Hilly Arawali region ( which is the one of the oldest hilly sange of the world) of the Rajasthan. Sumerpur is a town in the south part of Pali District of Rajasthan state inIndia. The town is headquarters of the Sumerpur revenue subdivision, andSumerpur Tahsil. Sumerpur is an important agricultural mandi (large market)[1] for Pali, Sirohi and Jalore districts., India. It belongs to Jodhpur Division . It is located 75 KM towards South from District head quarters Pali. It is a Tehsil head quarter. Sumerpur Pin code is 306902 and postal head office is Sumerpur . Koliwara ( 6 KM ) , Purara ( 6 KM ) , Pomawa ( 7 KM ) , Khiwandi ( 11 KM ) , Bisalpur ( 11 KM ) are the nearby Villages to Sumerpur. Sumerpur is located at the eastern side of the Thar Desert, on the right (north) bank of the Jawai River.[2] The Jawal River is an intermittent streamthat runs during monsoon season, and is tributary to the Luni River. The Sumerpur township covers an area of 5 km. The Jawai Bandh is a dam built across the Jawai river about 8 km southeast of the town centre. The dam was built between 1946 and 1957, and is the biggest dam in the western Rajasthan.[3] The reservoir provides habitat for wintering migratory birds, and is the main water supply source for Jodhpur cityIn the 2011 India census, Sumerpur had a population of 37,093. Males constituted 52% (19,202) of the population and females 48% (17,891). Sumerpur had an average literacy rate of 68.22%, lower than the national average of 74.04%: male literacy was 77.14%, and female literacy was 58.63%. In 2011 in Sumerpur, 12% of the population was under 6 years of age.[5]In the 2001 India census, Sumerpur had a population of 31,482. Males constituted 52% (16,486) of the population and females 48% (14,996). Sumerpur had an average literacy rate of 60%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy was 71%, and female literacy was 47%. In 2001 in Sumerpur, 12% of the population was under 6 years of age.[6Sumerpur is famous for its Daal Bati and Churma. It is found at most of the occasions whether it be marriage or festival.Sumerpur is one of the biggest markets for mustard seed. Cotton and chillis are exported from Sumerpur. Other major industries of Sumerpur are iron and wood works. Sumerpur is known in Rajasthanfor its ornamental iron works, which produces articles such as iron furniture, gates and railings.
